The Cascoland team exists of international and South African artists/ architects/ designers, animation filmmakers Moving Hands, a graphic and media team, and a production team consisting of local and Cascoland producers.
Artists are selected according to their background, expertise and approach towards the content and aims of the project. Specifically in working within art, architecture, design and public space, especially in relation to working with audiences. It is obvious that the outcomes and results of a project like Cascoland are largely dictated by context and circumstances and the participating artists’ reaction to these.

Audiences are mobilized to become involved through
• Active participation in the process initiated by the artists.
• Workshops are a means to transfer and exchange skills and experiences. Workshops including ‘Recycling’, ‘Animation film making’ and other creative skills are hosted by the artists and are free of charge.
• Development of events by existing initiatives. Cascoland will provide a platform for initiatives to present themselves.
• Development of artistic interventions by local artists in collaboration with Cascoland artists. Local creatives will be invited to initiate their own interventions within Cascoland.
• Training by assisting in the development of an artistic intervention by a Cascoland artist. By assisting logistically, creatively, productionwise, trainees are becoming part of an international collaboration, which can act as an incentive to launch and continue ongoing projects after Cascoland is over.

The education component is crucial to Cascoland’s objectives of creating awareness of urban issues and of the possibilities of activating public space through artistic/creative interventions across many disciplines and mediums. From the participation of design students of Vega School in Johannesburg valuable lessons were learned regarding design-education.

The challenge for us in Cascoland Durban 2008 lies in activating routes through artistic and architectural interventions in order to enable citizens to actively participate in, and negotiate the shaping of their public space. Cascoland 2008 proposes to connect the 'informal settlements' outside of the city center with the inner city context through engaging these 'informal routes'. We will stimulate this connection through various interventions that run along the 'axis' between urban and suburban and aim to mobilise audiences into engaging with these routes. Our base camp, The BAT Center, is firmly rooted in the heart of the Durban waterfront and is perfectly positioned to enable this connection with the communities along the central axis.

During a 5 week ‘laboratory’ phase, from 1 February to 7 March, Cascoland interventions will be initiated along the imaginary ‘axis’ leading to the city/BAT Centre. This can be tied together by a routing in the form of a ‘city walk’ or through connecting performances, and through involvement and participation of local residents, artists/craftspeople, initiatives. In this approach Cascoland interventions can integrate existing structures and initiatives.

Eventually from 7 – 16 March, Cascoland Durban 2008 will turn into a festival in public space, running workshops and showcasing the various subprojects in a program that aims to activate public space. The festivalprogram will also contain citywalks, open air film screenings and artists’ performances and Cascoland will provide the possibility for visitors to stay at Cascoland through food- and lodging-facilities, involving a range of initiatives along the imaginary axis, in close collaboration with local talent and communities.
