Why do we wish? What do we wish for? To what extent are our desires/needs determined by our socio-cultural context?

The 'I Wish...' project asks these questions. It was initiated with the intention of providing a platform for people to consider and express their wishes for the future.

The project has taken on several manifestations and has led to some interesting collaborations with other Cascoland artists ,especially designer Indre Klimate, students from Vega Brand Communications School and local social research initiative Imagine Durban (www.imaginedurban.co.za)

The mobile wish and portrait studio was established at various venues including Cato Manor, Umthombo Children’s Centre and Warwick Triangle. Passers by were invited to declare their wishes by writing them down and being photographed. The wish portraits were printed out and given to each participant. People responded enthusiastically Over 400 wishes were collected varying from the witty and superficial to the sincere and thought provoking.

Two wishing stations have been constructed. These portable kiosks are self-contained units that are placed in various public spaces. People are invited to write and deposit their wish. Visitors to the wish station are issued with a receipt to retain until their wish comes true. This is intended to encourage participants to recall, reinforce and possibly reconsider what they truly value.

Students of the Vega Brand of Communication School picked up on the idea of wish collection and recorded short video clips of people making their wishes. I am making a show reel of time-lapse animation to document the wish collection process and various interventions that it entails. I am mostly interested in how a space is shaped by the thoughts and (inter) actions of the people who occupy it.

Possible outcomes of the project could include a website where people can view the portraits and post their own wishes. As a social research project the wishes could be collated and analyzed according to content. This would provide a comprehensive idea of the values needs and desires of people from various cultural/religious backgrounds
