It was decided to make the audience actually walk part of the informal pedestrian route that Cascoland chose to activate, by organizing a daily street parade, called D’urban Experience. The street parade moved through a core node of the city, which is densely populated by various formal and informal trade, and more importantly by commuters moving between all parts of the city. For the duration of the festival, these spaces were transformed, activating an alternative approach to, and perception of the way people move through space. It was also integral for attracting audiences. As there is a rich political culture of public demonstrations in South Africa, the parade both excited and confused people to the point where someone passing asked what we were complaining about. It therefore incited a shift in thinking about the importance of cultural events where public gatherings can also be about solidarity in celebration.
