Cascoland Mafikeng 2010
Slow Res

Gitte Nygaard
The audience arriving at the Mafikeng Stadium is doing that for the most obvious reason- to watch a game of football. But instead of watching it from the stands, like audience normally does, they do it from the pitch, on big screens. That leaves the stands empty and visible- a template to fill with content, a massive billboard waiting to be used. Decided was to use the PVA gatherings in Mafikeng to promote the activities/goals of Life Line, an NGO dealing with trauma and emotional counselling, and the most urgent topics, HIV and AIDS.
Barely touching the stadium architecture, slow res facilitates bill board messaging with simple carpet tiles, square in shape and painted white on one side and red on the other. Grid designs are meticulously followed by volunteers to place tiles on stadium seats, slowly building phrases like “No Shame in HIV+” or “0 Holland – Espania 1” in a format legible from long distance for a mass audience.
Post-Cascoland responsibility: A proposed continuation of SlowRes at Mmabatho Stadium (George Seate, Stadium Manager) & www.2010nw.co.za (Chip, Pappie and Nadia)
