A New Hot (S)Pot in Mafikeng

Wouter Nieuwendijk
Answering a dire need of heat at Mmabatho Stadium during the winter evening public viewings of FIFA World Cup matches, Wouter designed a series of Hot Pots, which were placed amongst Jan Korbes and Thjeu Donders’ “lazy chairs”, in front of the cinema screen. The simple concept of a clay pot, placed upside down on a steel frame with gas burner, is reminiscent of an age-old Dutch house style of heating with a plant pot on top of the stove. Heat is stored in the clay, assuring a constant radiance of warm air circulating around the pot. The design, simple and gracious, attracted an instant demand in the Mafikeng market place.
