Cascoland eNewXds 2006

During a four week laboratory, from 1 February until 2 March 2006, a series of interventions were explored in the public spaces of New Crossroads, Cape town. Through a research of techniques, local materials, initiatives, skills and talents, informed by an engagement with the community of New Crossroads, actions and structures started to arise around the Mayenzeke-centre and between Lansdowne Rd and Koornhof Str, mobilizing people to participate in the shaping of their public space.
From 3 until 12 March Cascoland eNewXds 2006 was open to the general public, hosting a program of activities. Next to the constructed objects, there was a restaurant, a film festival, a radio-studio, music & dance and visitors were able to book a night in our b&b-object.
From the Cascoland Oerol 2004 objective of researching DIY architecture,
the focus for Cascoland eNewXds 2006 shifted towards an multidisciplinary activation of public space.
'The result: An explosion of public cultural life. A reported reduction in street crime, visitors of all kinds walking through a community otherwise usually isolated. Cascoland achieved significant goals.' Public Eye, March 2006
